About Byrd

Hi there! I’m Byrd (they/them/theirs/elle)! I am a certified sexuality educator and a sex and relationship practitioner devoted to supporting diverse individuals and partnerships in co-creating fluid, personalized paths toward their goals, whether that means cultivating a more pleasurable sex life, improving communication, reducing conflict, and more! I hold space for clients to explore topics around sexuality, relationships, and intimacy in an empathetic, collaborative environment. My goal is to be a collaborative advocate: someone who empowers people with the knowledge and tools they need to make informed choices about their bodies, sexuality, and relationships.

I’ve received professional training from the Institute for Sexuality Education and Enlightenment (ISEE), the Sexual Health Alliance (SHA), and the Gottman Institute. I’m also committed to ongoing learning through various forms, regularly expanding my knowledge to stay current, inclusive, and responsive to the evolving needs of the communities I serve.

Some of the ways we work together are somatic, body positive or body neutral, sex positive, and relational. I use an eclectic approach, including the Gottman method, somatic, parts work, relational, attachment theory, mindfulness, CBT (Cognitive behavioral therapy), DBT (Dialectical behavior therapy), and EFT (Emotionally-focused therapy).

I believe in creating nonjudgmental, affirming spaces. My work is deeply rooted in values that challenge oppressive and colonial systems. I operate from an anti-racist, anti-capitalist, queer and trans liberation, disability justice, trauma-informed, and Health at Every Size (HAES) framework, as well as being guided by empathy and radical acceptance. I am also a polyaffirmative and kink-knowledgable provider.
I consciously work outside of the therapy model. The typical therapeutic model has historically upheld systems of harm, particularly for marginalized communities, through structures like the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). For example, the DSM had pathologized queerness and transness well into the 21st century.

Moreover, many of the people I work with wouldn’t qualify for a diagnosis under the DSM, and they shouldn’t have to in order to receive support. As a sex and relationship practitioner, I’m able to meet people as they are, without requiring a diagnosis or a “problem to fix.” Together, we co-create expansive, adaptable paths that center your lived experience.

Because I’m not a therapist, I don’t bill insurance, and that comes with many benefits: your work with me stays entirely private, off insurance records, and outside of medicalized systems that can feel stigmatizing or invasive. This allows for greater autonomy, confidentiality, and choice in how you explore your sexual health and relationships. Moreover, there are many non-medicalised ways of healing that we can work on together, such as community-building, activism, self-diagnosis, education, sex-positivity, analysing the world around us through reading or social media, and more.

My experience with Byrd has been extremely transformative. They always listen so intently and ask questions that help me come to realisations about my sex life that I didn't think of before. With their help, I've been able to have a new outlook on myself and my relationship. I especially love how knowledgeable they are about my chronic illness, which is a main component of my relationship with my partner. It can be so hard to find a chronic illness-informed provider, so I'm grateful to have found them.

Byrd has this amazing ability to make us feel safe even when we’re bringing our messy, complicated, disabled, queer selves into the room. They balance insight, humor, and deep empathy, giving us the tools to untangle old patterns and build a stronger connection. Their flexible approach and sliding scale make it easy to engage fully without stress — these are hands-down the best couples sessions we’ve experienced in years!
– Client S.
I really enjoy working with Byrd! In our sessions, they help me get to deep topics in a way that feels safe without feeling overwhelming. I also really enjoy the fact that there is "homework" that feels actionable and helps me integrate the new skills we worked on together more fully. But it's never given as a hardcore requirement, which takes the stress down some on difficult topics. I also feel like I've gotten to more of the core issues I really want to work on in a quicker time than I have when working on it in the past. I also feel very supported and like Byrd goes out of their way to help find helpful resources for me, which I really appreciate! I would highly recommend working with Byrd!
